Sunshine…. Blue skies…. Warm temperatures…. Can’t always count on that in early April in New England.... More likely to have gray skies, cold, damp wind, temps in the 50’s feeling more like 40’s where wool caps, scarves, gloves & turned up collars are more the norm….
Some people say it takes a special kind of player to play baseball in a New England April. It’s easy to play in warmer climates where it’s always warm, hands & feet aren’t cold, nose isn’t running….. Know of any MLB teams that hold Spring Training in Lowell, MA??????
But we can count on Opening Day for High School baseball season!!!!!
A restless night’s sleep – maybe even for parents…. Game shirts worn to school for the 1st game – covering the tops of those low riding jeans…. Anxious every time an announcement is made hoping that the game isn’t cancelled…. Getting dressed for the game when someone realizes they’ve forgotten a piece of equipment or part of their uniform – it happens more than you think….
Players prancing around the field in pre-games like thoroughbreds readying for the Kentucky Derby…. Every fly ball & ground ball in outfield/infield approached with an equal amount of confidence & trepidation….
And then there’s the coaches….
The umpire yells “Play Ball!!!! Pitcher takes a deep breath and chucks the 1st pitch…. Hitter loads and…. The season is on!!!!
For the next 2+ hours, every team is in 1st place, every team just knows they’ll win the conference…. And then there’s the State Tournament…. All dreams are alive & well….
Chase that dream, boys; that’s what high school baseball is all about!!!!!
