The Tomahawks continued the winning way, topping neighboring rival Manchester HS, 7-3, at Riverfront Park on an ideal baseball day. The Tomahawks are now 2-0 in CCC North play, 7-0 overall.
Visiting Manchester rocked the Tomahawks back on their heels, quickly scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Three singles combined with 2 throwing errors opened the gates for the Indians.
The Tomahawks mounted a threat in the bottom of the 1st inning when, with 1 out, Spencer Haymond & David Johnston singled; Mike Habzda drew a walk to load the bases. Manchester's defense ended the threat with a neatly turned double play to close out the inning.
The Tomahawks worked to tie the score in the bottom of the 3rd inning. With one out, Josh Barrett & Haymond drew walks. Johnston followed with a line drive double over the left fielder's head scoring both runners. Gbury went ahead for the 1st time in their half of the 4th. Kyle Richards led off with a single; Jason Sutkowski drew a walk. After Richards was forced at 3rd on a sacrifice bunt attempt, Sutkowski & Alex Hanelt executed a double steal, putting runners on 2nd & 3rd. Sutkowski scored on the ensuing wild pitch.
The Tomahawks stretched the lead to 4, plating 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Johnston's one out single, followed by an error and a Kevin O'Connell walk loaded the bases. Richards' fly ball to left scored Johnston & Sutkowski's 2 out, looping single to right knocked in Habzda & O'Connell.
Gbury scored their final run in the bottom of the 6th when Anthony Longo dropped a bunt down the 3rd base line for a lead off single. Barrett followed with a single & Haymond was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Johnston's sacrifice fly to left scored Longo.
Manchester scored a run in top of the 7th inning to complete the scoring.
Ben Sellew was the starting pitcher for the Tomahawks. After escaping the 1st inning, Sellew settled down to hurl a complete game for his 2nd win of the season. He limited the Indians to 1 earned run on 7 hits. Sellew struck out 8 while walking no one in a command performance.
Johnston led the offensive attack with 3 hits including a double and 3 rbi's. Richards had 2 base knocks. Barrett, Haymond, Sutkowski & Longo also added hits.
The Tomahawks return to action visiting New Britain at BeeHive Stadium on Friday in another CCC North contest.
