A Wild Comeback For An Opening Day Win!!!!!!

The Tomahawks opened their season with a dramatic, come-from-behind, 9 inning win over Farmington by a 7-6 score. Kyle Richard’s 2 out single knocked in David Johnston with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning to complete the wild comeback.

Farmington scored 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning on 2 walks, a single, a double & a 3-run homer to grab quick control of the game. The Tomahawks answered by plating one run in the bottom of the inning. Johnston singled up the middle with 2 outs and scored from 1st on Mike Habzda’s long double to right-center field.

After the 1st inning craziness, the game settled into pitcher’s game until the Tomahawks began to mount their comeback in the bottom of the 4th inning. Kevin O’Connell reached 1st base with one out via HBP. Richards lined a double to left-center field. Jason Sutkowski followed with a 2 rbi line single to left field to make the score 5-3 Farmington after 4 innings.

Josh Barrett started the bottom of the 5th with a walk followed by a Spencer Haymond single. With one out, Habzda drew a walk to load the bases. O’Connell lined a single to left scoring Barrett & Haymond to tie the game. Habzda scored the go-ahead run on a error to give the Tomahawks their 1st lead of the game, 6-5, after 6 innings.

Farmington scored an unearned run in the top of the 7th inning to tie the score setting up the extra innings finish.

Haymond led off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt attempt ended with Haymond being nabbed at 3rd base leaving a runner on 1st base. Habzda drew a walk to put runners on 1st & 2nd with one out. A fielder’s choice for the 2nd out of the inning left runners on 1st & 3rd with two outs. Richards ended the game with his solid single into left field to create the pig-pile in the middle of the infield.

After the rough top of the 1st inning, Ben Sellew settled down, pitching into the 7th inning, at one point retiring 12 batters in a row. His final line showed 6 runs, 5 hits, 3 strikeouts & 3 walks in what turned out to be a very good performance. Joe Spero relieved Sellew with one out in the 7th and pitched 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball to notch his 1st win of the season. Anthony Longo also singled for the Tomahawks.

The Tomahawks (1-0) travel next to EO Smith on Monday, April 13, 2009 for their 2nd game of the season.
