The Tomahawks’ trip to E.O. Smith High School resulted in a solid 10-1 win over the host Panthers on Monday to move their record to 2-0. Jimmy Hill (5 innings) & David Johnston (2 innings) combined to hold the Panthers to 1 run & 6 hits with Hill notching his 1st varsity win. Kevin O’Connell led the 10 hit attack with a 4 for 5 performance.
The Tomahawks opened the scoring in the top of the 1st when Josh Barrett reached base on an error and was driven in on Johnston’s ground out.
The Tomahawks added 5 more runs in the top of the 2nd. O’Connell and Kyle Richards started the inning with singles and each stole a base. Jason Sutkowski was hit with a pitch to load the bases with no out. Alex Hanelt promptly whacked a line drive single to right to drive in 2 runs. With 1 out, Anthony Longo & Barrett walked. Sutkowski, Longo & Barrett all scored on an infield error to make the score 6-0 after 2 innings.
E.O. Smith tallied their lone run in the bottom of the 3rd when Hill limited them to the only score after Smith loaded the bases with a double, walk & single with no one out.
Gbury added 2 more runs in the 4th. Spencer Haymond led off the inning being hit by a pitch and moved up on a fielder’s choice. With 2 outs, O’Connell singled to drive in Haymond. O’Connell stole 2nd base and was driven in by Richards 2 out single.
The Tomahawks closed the scoring in the 7th by plating 2 runs. Nick Neild reached 1st via the 4th HBP of the day for the ’hawks. Neild scored when Barrett reached base on an infield error. Johnston scored the final run on Mike Habzda’s 2 out double to left center.
O’Connell (4), Richards (2), Hanelt, Longo, Habzda & Sutkowski all had hits. O’Connell, Ricahards, Haymond & Sutkowski all had stolen bases.
The Tomahawks return to action on Friday when they host Fermi at the GHS Varsity Field.
