The Tomahawks ran off to their 5th win of the season Friday, defeating Newington 12-0 at Riverfront Park in a CCC inter-division game. Ben Sellew pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to notch his 1st win of the season. Sellew limited the Newington offense to a single and a double, while striking out 4 and walking only 1. Emmett Ravis & Jimmy Hill finished out the game without allowing a hit to complete the standout pitching effort.
The Tomahawks broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the 3rd inning sending 11 hitters to the plate. Anthony Longo & Josh Barrett led off the inning with walks. Spencer Haymond lined a solid double into right-center field driving in Longo with the game's 1st run. David Johnston grounded to 3rd base, plating Barrett with the 2nd run of the inning, Haymond moving to 3rd. Mike Habzda walked putting runners at 1st & 3rd with one out. Kevin O'Connell singled to right driving in Haymond. Kyle Richards singled to load the bases. Jason Sutkowski drew a walk to score Habzda. Alex Hanelt walked to drive in O'Connell. Longo grounded to 2nd base to drive in Richards; when the throw to complete the double play eluded the 1st baseman, Sutkowski scored the 7th run of the inning.
The Tomahawks completed their scoring with 5 more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Richards led off with a walk, Sutkowski & Hanelt were hit with successive pitches to load the bases. Longo & Barrett walked to drive in Richards & Sutkowski. Haymond grounded to the pitcher scoring Hanelt. Johnston legged out a single to drive in Longo. Habzda's grounder drove in Barrett with the final run.
Haymond, Johnston, O'Connell & Richards had the Tomahawk hits. Longo & Barrett contributed solid defensive plays to support the pitching.
The Tomahawks open division play traveling to McKenna to take on East Hartford on Monday.
