The Tomahawks traveled to West Hartford Hall High School to take on the Warriors in a game rescheduled from this past Monday. After another exciting contest, they returned home with their 4th win to start the young season by a 4-2 score.
After Hall jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Tomahawks responded immediately with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd to grab the lead they never relinquished. Jason Sutkowski led off the inning with an infield single. After 2 were out, Josh Barrett whacked a double to right-center moving Sutkowski over to 3rd base. Spencer Haymond followed with a single into left field, driving in Sutkowski, advancing Barrett to 3rd. David Johnston legged out an infield hit, driving in Barrett with the go ahead run. Mike Habzda singled to load the bases before the side was retired.
Gbury scored again in the top of the 4th. Alex Hanelt singled with 2 outs. Anthony Longo followed with a long double over the centerfielder's head, scoring Hanelt all the way from 1st base.
The Tomahawks added an important run in the 7th. Johnston looped a single into right field to lead off the inning. Habzda followed with a double into right, moving Johnston to 3rd. Kevin O'Connell looped a double down the right line, scoring Johnston; Habzda was only able to move to 3rd, having to hold up to see if the ball was caught.
David Johnston was the starting pitcher for the Tomahawks, pitching 6 2/3 strong innings before coming out of the game. He surrendered 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 6, walking 3 to notch his 1st win on the season. Joe Spero relieved Johnston with 2 out and bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th, surrendering a ground ball hit with Hall scoring their 2nd run of the game before getting a ground out to end the game and grab his 1st save.
The Tomahawks rapped 13 hits in their best offensive display of the young season. Johnston with 3 hits, Barrett, Haymond, & Habzda with 2 hits each & O'Connell, Sutkowski, Hanelt & Longo with hits brought out the bats. Barrett, Johnston, Habzda, O'Connell & Longo all had doubles.
The Tomahawks, now 4-0, play on Friday, hosting Newington at Riverfront Park at 3:45pm in a non-division game prior to league play starting next week.
